New Point Breakdown for Race Series

For many reasons I don't really want to get into, we decided to change the way we tally the points for the race series. Instead of giving 30 points to the winner and then just roll down throughout all participants, a more consistent point allocation is going to be used.

The winner of each event (male and female) each get 1000 points. And your points are given out depending on how far off the winner you were.

Winners time 900 seconds
Your time 1000 seconds

Number of points winner gets = 1000
Number of points you get = 1000 X (900/1000) = 900 points

Additionally you will receive 50 participation points for each event to are at!

Hopefully this will make it more exciting because it means that big comebacks are possible!

If this doesn't work. We will go back to the way it was before.

Spring Fling 10k

Well, last Saturday saw the latest addition to our spring fling race series. Despite the ugly weather bringing out a limited number of riders, the competition was still hot!

Iona was dry when the group got there, with a few teams doing their usual Saturday workout. After a few minutes of letting everyone cool down and shiver at the start the race got underway. A tail cross from the South kept you feeling like you were strong all the way to the turnaround, and that's when you discovered that, after that turn around, the "tail" of the cross became a very evil head.

The rain held off, and we saw some very impressive times for the conditions. Derrick Lee posted an incredible time of 16:20, almost a minute faster than the next fastest rider, earning him top spot among the guys. Celeste posted the leading women's time with an awesome 19:02!

Waiting in the cold for the start

Without further adieu, here are the times and points (hopefully I got them right) for the race.

Derrick 16:20
Sherwood 17:02
Matt 17:52
Scott 17:59
Nathaniel 19:09
Andrew 19:40
Winston 20:10

Celeste 19:02
Kim 19:55
Victoria 20:49
Claire 21:06
Lauren 21:17
Mel T 21:48
Karin 24:43

OH MY!

After the 3rd event in the Spring Fling Series, we see a familiar face atop the female leaderboard in Victoria Gilbert. Will she be able to maintain this lead in the Aquathon next week? Rumours of an injured foot are spreading, however, no evidence of aforementioned injury can been seen in the results.

And in the mens division another famous duo in Matt Reeve and Nathaniel Janzen trying to take over the top spot. Currently in a dead heat for first.

What this semester lacks in numbers, it surely is making up for in drama as taunting has already begun for the upcoming events, Storm the Wall being the focus of most attention.

Stay Tuned, Race report to follow.

Pre-Game Show: UBCTC Spring Fling Race Series

VANOC confirms earlier start of UBCTC Spring Fling Race Series will buy more time for snow making process in Cypress

Vancouver, BC - In response to ongoing unseasonably warm weather, an innovative effort to combat the issue is implemented in the contingency plan by the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic Games. This strategy will in effect permit the University of British Columbia Triathlon Club to host TWO of seven events in the 2010 Spring Fling Racing Series before the Olympic Break to stall for more time. Despite earlier concerns of increased traffic congestion between the two big sporting events being hosted in the city during similar times, which have already pushed back other named events to later dates such as the Vancouver Sun Run and UBC Triathlon, warmer weather is expected to continue to deplete existing snow stockpiles at alarming rates.

This strategy is to buy more time to tackle the snow stockpiling problem for the venue organizers in Cypress, while the world’s attention is drawn towards the exciting and new UBCTC Spring Fling Race Series leading up to the Winter Olympics Games.

Snow Makers

The UBCTC executive team expects more intense competition among the field in this jammed-packed 7-event race series than the previous 12-event race series witnessed in the 2009 Fall Classic. Like last term, points will be awarded based on placing on a uniform hierarchy scale and in addition bonus points will be added for participation. Nifty prizes will be also awarded to those who break the existing course records. More details to be released later.

All athletes who competed in the 2009 Fall Classic couldn’t pass up on this exciting opportunity for another chance at triumph or redemption or BOTH. New competing athletes will enjoy this cool experience, one they can’t really say no to.

Together, their passions are fuelled by countless hours dedicated to training. It sounds like an unlawful punishment to most, but it’s often considered as a lifestyle choice for the most fervent athletes. They are competitors by nature, and will do whatever they can to win. You can bet trash talkers are already witting away at several clever nick names to have at their disposal. The competition will be fierce; many have already linked the level of competition in the race series equivalent to the other big sporting event.

In response to the announcement of the new UBCTC Spring Fling Race series starting earlier, an anonymous person was quoted, “I hate it, but I love it!”

The first event, 500m test swim set, is scheduled to take place on Sunday February 7th, 2010. The second event, 5km run, will commence soon after on Wednesday February 10th, 2010.

This Spring Fling Race Series will mark for exciting blogging coverage. Be sure to stay tuned for updates.

UBCTC Spring Fling Race Series

After very little debate, the name of this race series has not been changed, therefore I am making the executive decision and keeping it there for simplicity.

We haven't worked out the exact dates of all the events, however, the first two events which will be taking place Pre-Olympics are going to be as follows.

Sunday February 7th, 2010
- 500m Swim Test Set

Wednesday February 10th 2010
- 5km Run TT

Gross I know, but I figured we would keep the more exciting events for after the holiday.

Realizing that this is somewhat hard with midterm crunch we are going to adapt the point system a little bit just this time.

In order to get full participation points, the event needs to be done sometime between now and the 12th when the Olympics start, however, if you can't make one of these events due to studying or exams, then simply let an executive know that you have done it and we will mark down your time.

The 5 km course will be decided on this week to make it fair for everyone.

Cool, I hope people are pumped. After all the smack talk last semester, I hope we can keep up the intensity.

Motivation

New to the 2010 Spring Season, I have decided to create a little motivation for all athletes participating in the next race series: UBCTC Spring Fling Series (name may change).

All athletes who beat their time in ANY of the events from last semester (other than the Aquathon because SOMEONE forgot to time it) will win a prize. What that prize is I'll keep secret for now but rest assured it is GOOD!

In addition to this, any athlete who breaks one of the team records will also be awarded a SUPER prize. It will be similar to the individual prizes but BIGGER!

Is everyone excited? You should be! Race series starts in just about a month, time to get rid of that Holiday Excess and get back in gear.
